On this tour, all Placencia Adventurers will take a ride to the Cayo district and travel back in time to visit the Ancient Mayans and see the amazing Inland Blue Hole.
After about a two hour ride, we’ll arrive at the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. Placed atop a ridge above the Mopan River, and well within sight of the Guatemala border, you’ll get to explore the ruins of this site that once served as a Maya civic ceremonial center in the Late and Terminal Classic periods.
Xunantunich means “Stone” Woman” in the Maya language, and this “Stone Woman” is said to haunt the Maya site, beginning in 1892. She dresses in white and has red glowing eyes. She appears in front of “El Castillo,” the largest pyramid on the site rising 130 feet above the main plaza.
Upon finishing our exploration of Xunantunich’s mysteries, we’ll head to Blue Hole National Park and see the famous Inland Blue Hole. This beautiful pool of water is actually a sinkhole formed by the collapse of an underground river channel. Take a refreshing swim and enjoy the the jungle scenery of ferns, hanging vines, birds.
